Impact Bond for Flying rivers of the Amazon

"The Amazon, the lungs of the world! It is essential for regulating the climate and sustaining life by absorbing carbon and generating 'flying rivers' of freshwater. With water scarcity on the horizon, protecting these natural cycles is crucial for the survival of life on our planet." World Economic Forum

THE PROBLEM

  1. There's a reduction in the number of trees capable of releasing water vapor into the Colombian atmosphere

  2. The flying rivers account for about 20% to 25% of global rainfall, highlighting their significant influence on the current global economy.

  3. They contribute to the creation of 1 in every 2 jobs.

  4. Rainfall distribution is 70%, 50%, and 25% in South America, Central America, and North America, respectively, emphasizing the potential impact of imbalances on local communities.

  5. The flying rivers create essential conditions for agriculture, ensuring food security for 1 billion people.

OUR PURPOSE

An IB that harnesses technology and innovation to drive jaguar conservation The technological component is “The Dome of the Jaguar”, an educational game designed to promote learning. It is built on a scientific and methodological foundation to ensure a correspondence between the virtual and real world . Funds raised from purchases made in the game will be allocated to jaguar conservation projects led by WWF

Impact Bond to conserve ancestral knowledge through education

“Protecting and disseminating indigenous traditional knowledge among younger generations will promote the preservation and sustainable use of resources. It also contributes to human well-being and creates a sense of awareness about the urgency of environmental conservation.”

-Inter-American Development Bank

THE PROBLEM

  1. Colombia is the third country in Latin America with the greatest linguistic diversity.(1)

  2. Out of the 68 surviving languages, 34 are at high risk of disappearing because they are only spoken by groups of fewer than a thousand people.(2)

  3. The loss of languages has an impact on the conservation of the Amazon, as, with their disappearance, ancestral knowledge for preserving nature is also lost

OUR PURPOSE

To raise awareness among the children of the country about the existence and ways of life of different indigenous cultures in Colombia and their importance for national identity and nature conservation

Impact Bond for the Rescue and Restoration of Biodiversity in Vulnerable or Endangered Native Trees in an Amazonian Country

“45% of Colombia's endemic trees and shrubs are at risk of extinction”- Alexander von Humboldt Research Institute

THE PROBLEM

  1. Lack of identification of healthy trees of diverse species, which are often the first to be logged due to their robustness

  2. Weakness in the management, utilization, and use plans for seeds from native plus trees in the region

  3. Lack of economic opportunities and sustainable income for local communities

OUR PURPOSE

This IB focuses on creating a Biodiversity Guardian Communities Network, which, through training processes and economic incentives, will conserve native forest species that are at some degree of threat or risk.

Additionally, a Seed Rescue and Utilization System will be developed to ensure the supply of plant material for restoration processes. Finally, a Biodiversity Planting and Restoration Plan will be implemented to recover populations of native trees in areas degraded by deforestation in the Colombian Amazon.

Impact Bond for Sustainable Tourism based on a holistic vision of nature and culture

“Tourism, a genuine engine of solidarity and development, possesses a unique power to bring together travelers and communities. It can provide opportunities and sustainable development, contributing to the preservation of the environment worldwide” World Tourism Organization

THE PROBLEM

  1. The tourism sector can contribute to the conservation, promotion, and enjoyment of the natural and cultural heritage of the Colombian Amazon región, strengthening cultural diversity, self esteem, and and empowerment of local communities, cultural exchange, social cohesión, peace, and development. However, deliberate and coordinated actions are required to achieve this.

  2. There is an urgency to promote conscious and responsible tourism that helps raise awareness of the risks threatening the sustainability of the natural and cultural heritage of the Amazon

  3. It is necessary to work in post-conflict zones of the Amazon biome to help restore the rights of victimized communities and reduce migration to cities, as this phenomenon poses a serious threat to the preservation of the livelihoods of local communities, essential for the environmental sustainability of this territory.

OUR PURPOSE

This Impact Bond focuses on tourism with the aim of promoting the conservation of nature and cultural heritage. We seek to create synergies for the continuous improvement of indigenous communities and the conservation of biodiversity in the Colombian Amazon region.

We will collaborate with Awake Travel, which aims to connect travelers with nature, and Canoa Cósmica, which aims to offer authentic cultural experiences, as well as to showcase and increase the sales of local artisanal products.

Additionally, WWF Colombia will collaborate in implementing conservation projects in the regions where the tourism initiatives are carried out.

Impact Bond for Jaguar Conservation

“Due to our manner of interacting with nature, jaguars have disappeared from 46% of their original territory and are extinct in countries such as El Salvador and Uruguay”- WWF

THE PROBLEM

  1. The jaguar is a species that requires large territories to survive, and its existence is largely threatened because it has lost approximately 50% of its habitat. (1)

  2. The absence of the jaguar in its ecosystem leads to imbalance since, as the largest predator, it controls the growth of herbivore populations. If these herbivores grow unchecked, they consume plant species without control, altering the composition and structure of the jungle
